Mix & Mingle Write-up
This weekend saw an excellent Mix & Mingle take place with two nights of partying and two long days of high quality Ultimate, all with a cracking eighties soundtrack.
24 teams descended on Sheffield with many of them arriving on Friday night to take advantage of the private bar and cheap cocktails at The Forum. £3 Espresso Martinis from 7pm until 9pm kept us all up into the small hours and there were many sore heads come Saturday morning!
During eight hours play on Saturday, there were some very intense match-ups, along with some slightly larger scorelines! The only pool to be decided on day one was Pool D, with Don't Let Go holding seed and winning the group, and Skills or Bills switched places with Dixie Wrecked to take a spot in the top eight. 2009 champions Bigger Than You also secured their place in the top eight by winning all of their games in Pool A.
Of course the real reason people head to this event is the big eighties party on Saturday night, and this year it was no different! A minor issue on arrival was (fairly) quickly sorted and everyone seemed to have a really good night out. DJ Tom Styles span the 80s tunes all night long and there were some amazing costumes on show. Special mention must go to 'Jesus' Salter for his Pop-up Pirate and to Don't Let Go for their Young Ones outfits. The prize for best costume (as voted for by all the teams) went to Vanessa, Kat, Lou (for the second year in a row) and Kate for the Hungry Hungry Hippos.
Sunday kicked off with the remaining pool games - P*Star taking on Trigger Happy was the big game early on with the team from Newcastle winning 7-5 to take Pool B.
At this point in the weekend the schedule split into top, middle and bottom eights; and any team to win their remaining three games would get to take home a trophy. A poor day on Saturday saw Naughty Strawberries in the bottom eight and they were able to pick up their game to run through as Spoon winners, beating Halcyon 9-1 in the final. Further down the order Carlisle improved on their last place in 2009 by finishing 20th, and this years bottom placed club was a rather inexperienced Phat 'eds.
Tatty Bojangles hoped to keep the Plate trophy in Sheffield but failed at the final hurdle. A great semi-final win, coming back from behind to beat Scart Leeds 6-5 in sudden death, was their best performance of the weekend. The plate final was won by We've Got Guns, beating TB 10-3.
The top eight quarters saw victories for all the pool winners and the semi-finals were both incredibly tight. Don't Let Go beat Bigger Than You 6-5, with P*Star losing out to DiscMen 8-7. BTY finished 3rd in the end and DiscMen ran out 10-5 winners in an excellent final.
The spirit prize was also hotly contested and was won by Meat Pie, who got one more point than Lemmings, who in turn got two more points than Trigger Happy.
All in all, it was an excellent weekend! The full results and some photos, videos and comments will be online in the near future.
