Teams and Tournament Structure

Teams will be created based on the information you provide on your entry form, and we endeavour to make them as even as possible.  The criteria for team selection is gender, experience, handler ability and fitness. There will be up to 12 players on each team, giving you plenty of subs, and up to 12 teams competing in the tournament.

The exact structure will depend on the number of players we end up with but you will likely play around 10 matches on the weekend, and these will be approximately 35-40 minutes in length.  See the player pack for a detailed schedule.

Fundraising

This year we are raising money for Access Sport.  This is taken from their website:

Founded in 2004 Access Sport is a dynamic charity whose mission is to give more children, particularly in disadvantaged areas, access to a wide range of quality local sport.  We look to harness the proven power of sport to tackle social exclusion, inactivity and obesity in areas where help is most needed. We achieve this through empowering the inspirational community volunteers who set up and run local sports clubs with cash, expert advice and networking to help create thriving clubs which get more people positively engaged.

There will be a number of fundraising activities to get involved with over the weekend and our ideas are listed below.  You'll see more detail as and when activities are confirmed.

Fantasy Ultimate

The Fantasy Ultimate returns during the MVP Show Game on Saturday evening.  Entry is £2 per ticket and the winnings get split between the charity and the person with the winning ticket, meaning you can win up to £64 yourself, with the other half going to Access Sport.  More details will be in the player pack.

Accuracy Competition

Unfortunately due to an event clash Catch The Spirit are unable to bring the Disc Golf demo we were hoping for, but they are sponsoring an accuracy competition and will be donating prizes for the event.  We've got two limited edition discs up for grabs likely for winning a 30m and 50m competition.  £1 for three throws to score points, and if it is tied we'll have a throw off.

Lotto Bonus Ball

Pay a pound and choose a number from 1 to 49.  We'll get the draw up on the big screen and the person with the main draw bonus ball wins a stack of cash, whilst raising plenty of money for charity too!

3 pint challenge contest

A classic frisbee drinking competition.  There'll be a prize for the quickest time and the first 10 entrants get their pints for free!  We welcome charitable donations when you take part.

Random Bottle Draw

We're going to ask players to donate bottles to the cause - these could be booze, sauce, shampoo or anything you like.  We'll attach string to the bottles and hide the goods.  You pay £1, choose a string and find out what you've got.  Simples.

Double Disc Court (DDC)

This year we are running an informal DDC competition alongside the Hat.  You will need to enter in a pair and you will then be responsible for setting up matches against other pairs, scoring and refereeing your matches and recording the scores at HQ.  Each match should be one set, the winner being the first to get to 13 points.

We have one marked pitch but there will be plenty of spare cones in order to set up an extra pitch if required.  There will be two sets of official 110g DDC discs for you to compete with so this should level the playing field a little.  The pair which records the most victories over the weekend will win a prize!

There will be a copy of the full rules and info sheet at HQ, but if you are considering entering the DDC competition we would recommend checking out the following:

Camping

We have plenty of on-site camping space for both the Friday and Saturday nights, with 24 hour access to toilets and showers.

There is a charge of £10 per tent, which is the amount requested by the venue (we're not trying to make a profit from you!).  You can either pay this at the same time as your player fee, or when you arrive and register on the day, but you will not be allowed to pitch your tent without confirmation of your payment.

As with last year, you will be provided with a numbered tag for your tent, so that we, and the venue management, know that your camping fee has been confirmed.  All fees will then be passed on to the venue at the end of the weekend.

Spirit

Spirit is always important at the Sheffield Hat and we have an abundance of prizes this year to reflect that.  This year's team prize will include Lookfly Spirit Tags and the return of the Spirit Cake!  There will also be vouchers on offer for the most spirited player on each team, voted for by your opponents.

We are also getting some special Spirit Discs this year, coming from the USA with one of the tournament competitors.  There will be three prizes, going to the most spirited male and female players in the tournament (though players with limited playing experience) and also to the best/most useful/nicest volunteer.

MVPs

As with previous years, you will be required to nominate an MVP from your opposition after each match.  This year, however, you will also nominate an MVP from your own team too.  At the end of Saturday, the players with the highest number of votes will take part in the MVP showgame, where everyone has a chance to win a cash prize and also raise money for charity.

At the end of the weekend the player on each team with the most combined MVP votes will get a prize.

Party

The Sheffield Hat party tends to be a fairly relaxed affair.  On Friday we'll be in the bar from about 8pm until close and you'll be able to register your arrival, meet your teammates and have a catch up with old friends.

On Saturday the bar is open until 1am (tbc) and we'll have some pub games out in the marquee, or inside in the Games Room, for your entertainment (beer pong and table football kept most people entertained last year!).

Food is available until 8pm (maybe 9pm) on-site and there should be some good deals available.  We really encourage you to purchase your food and drink from the bar and cafe here as all the proceeds go to the Hillsborough Arena charity, allowing them to have the venue and fields for our use.  It's much better spending money with them than at some money-grabbing Wetherspoons or the like.

Hillsborough Sports Arena is a licensed venue (including all outside areas) so please only drink alcohol which has been purchased from the bar in the clubhouse.
